Limassol Medieval Castle

by

Limassol Castle is a medieval building that took its current form around 1590, during the Ottoman rule, when it was built on top of an earlier castle of much larger dimensions. The Ottomans initially used it as a prison, a use that was maintained during the British ruleas well. When it came under the jurisdiction of the Cyprus Department of Antiquities, the first provincial archaeological museum was hosted here. Today it functions as a medieval museum that hosts exhibits from the 3rd to the 18th century A.D. According to the tradition, in this Castle Richard the Lionheart married Berengaria of Navarre and also crowned her Queen of England in 1191.
