Sanctuary of Apollo Hylates

by

Apollo Hylates, the God of the Forests, was the patron of Kurion and was worshiped in the area as early as the 8th century BC. This important religious sanctuary originally consisted of a temple, a circular monument and an altar. During the Roman period it underwent many conversions and expansions. Most of the monuments preserved today belong to the 1st century AD such as the temple of Apollo (which has been partially restored), the pilgrims’ halls, the “palaestra”, a bath complex and the sacred precinct.
